Review of “Crystallize” for Band:

When you hear the name “Lindsey Stirling,” you probably envision “new-age violin,” “high-energy” “electronic music,” “amazing dance choreography,” and “entertaining music videos.”  But does band literature come to mind?  Not really…until now!   This year, Kevin Ward has taken Lindsey’s most popular single, Crystallize, and arranged it for concert band.  Harmonically rewarding, aesthetically pleasing, and stylistically true to the original, this masterpiece will open new doors to the concert band world, allowing audiences and performers alike to enjoy a modern-classical twist on one of America’s most beloved instrumental pop artists.

Although scored for full band and an impressive percussion ensemble, Crystallize is suited for both large and small ensembles alike.  The piece was purposefully orchestrated to accommodate bands lacking instruments such as oboe, bassoon, and bass clarinet, which are either doubled or non-essential.  A play-along percussion track (mp3), included with the sheet music, can also be a valuable asset to bands lacking percussionists. 

When commissioned, Crystallize for band was considered a risky undertaking due to the challenge of creating an adequate ensemble arrangement from a primarily electronic single.  Ward, however, has amazed band directors and critics alike with a composition that embodies all the beauty of the original while highlighting the color and capacity of a live concert band.  Climactic harmonies and powerful dynamic contrasts are emotionally-charged and musically satisfying.  The challenging melodic line is facilitated as different instruments exchange the melody, allowing different sections of the band to be featured throughout.  This timeless piece of literature is one that musicians will want to perform again and again.
